Volunteers wanted.

We are Kath(65) and Dirk(62). Kath is originally from Wales and Dirk is Dutch. We live in an old finca in a beautiful valley with almond trees and olives in the mountains of Sierra Espuna, Murcia, Spain.  The finca/farm is situated on the edge of the Natural Park, and is terrific for hiking, biking, climbing, cycling and watching wildlife – including golden eagles. wild boar (javali) and arrui   (a type of mountain goat/deer from the Atlas Mountains).

The nearest village is a short walk away and we are lucky to have two bakeries, three bars and restaurants (all 3 with free WiFi) and a village shop. We are about a 25-minute drive from the nearest town, where there is a wide selection of shops, supermarkets, banks etc. and a really good vegetable, fruit and clothes market once a week. We will make a few trips weekly should anyone need anything.

We will be starting the second phase of the building renovations on the old ruined farmhouse, this autumn (2019) Also, we are landscaping the terrace that the farmhouse sits on and developing raised vegetable beds and flower beds.  It is our aim to be completely organic within the next few years. At present we don’t use any sprays/pesticides on our vegetables and fruit and we are working towards being self-sufficient.

There is still an awful lot to do and we can use some help. Apart from renovating the farm (more rebuilding, actually) we need some helping hands with:

  • gardening. e.g. making raised vegetable beds
  • demolishing the last bit of the old ruin
  • building a fox proof chicken coop
  • building guest accommodations
  • building a outdoor bread oven
  • making a paddle pool for the hot summer days
  • building dry stone walls
  • making a compost toilet and outdoor shower
  • collecting and cutting firewood
  • building a poly tunnel
  • and many more.

In exchange for +/- 25 hours of help a week we offer 3 healthy (vegetarian) meals a day and a place to rest your head at night. The first volunteers will be the pioneers and have to sleep in tents. Great if you bring your own tent, but it is possible to borrow one of ours. There is plenty of space on our farm so bringing a caravan or motor home is no problem at all.

This is an opportunity to learn some skills such as organic gardening and dry stone wall building, learn or practice Spanish or just have cheap holiday.

We don't mind if you only want to come for just one week or stay 3 months or longer. You don't need to have any skills (we will teach you everything you need to know). Though we would like to see progress, it's not all about work. We also want to have a good time with the volunteers, get to know different  people and learn from each other.

Kath and Dirk are looking forward hearing from you.
